Levels of Editing:

We provide editing services on four levels.  Our clients can choose the service that best fits their needs, or combine levels for a custom solution.

Sometimes editing jobs require more than one read-through, depending upon the level of editing necessary. As an added value, if we determine your piece would benefit, we will use two or more editors for multiple read-throughs, ensuring fresh eyes and accuracy.

            Proofreading

This bare-bones service is a final read-through of a polished document or manuscript before it is submitted for publishing.  The focus is on catching typos and formatting errors.   The service features fast turn-around time and low rates.

            Light editing

The focus of this service is on the basics—spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization.  Tables of content, numbered lists, and table and figure numbers are reviewed.  One read-through is normal.

            Copyediting

This service is our most requested level of editing.  In addition to the focus points of a light editing job, the copyediting service concentrates further on syntax, numbers, abbreviations, and gender neutrality.  We carefully consider content and ensure that your writing strictly adheres to specified style.  Depending on the quality of writing, more than one read-through may be required.

            Substantive editing

The most thorough of our services, substantive (or heavy) editing takes copyediting to a higher level.   We watch for organizational weakness, lack of focus, redundancies, wordiness, triteness, vague generalizations, and weak sentence style; through notation, we make suggestions for corrective changes.  This service typically requires two or more read-throughs to guarantee the highest quality results.
